The beautiful Amboyna burl comes from the same tree. The tree grows to a height of about 40 meters and has a trunk that measures 2 meters in diameter. All around the tree, you will on many occasions find buttresses extending outwardly and upwards. It is a very hard and heavy wood.
In some places, the hardwood could exhibit a purple color but mostly it is colored a reddish orange, rose, or reddish tan. If you hold up a piece of this exotic wood to the sun, you will be able to discern the change in its appearance at different angles of light. Due to an inherent quality of the wood cells, this wood becomes a beautiful opalescent color when placed in water.
