Replacing A Lost Online Passport
Losing your essential travel document is never a good thing. It is particularly bad if you lose it within a day or two of travelling or, worse, if you are already overseas. Fortunately, there are procedures for recovering it. Once it has been cancelled, a lost US passport cannot be reactivated so make sure it really has been lost or stolen before you set the wheels in motion.
Inform The US State Department
The first thing you need to do is inform the State Department. If you are within the United States of America, this is in Washington, D. C. If you are already abroad, inform the closest US Consulate or Embassy. Do this immediately before it falls into unsafe hands and is used illegitimately.

You may report the loss over the telephone or by filling in, signing and sending in Form DS-64. The form may be found on the internet on the American State Department web site. If You Find It

Expedited Service is the best choice when you need your documents within two weeks due to a lost expedited passport. It will be processed and returned to you within eight to fourteen business days. In addition to the expedited new American passport documentation required when you are under no time pressure, you will need proof of your intent to travel. The next level up is 'Rush Service', which takes five to seven days. Priority service takes less than one week and Next Day and 24 Hour levels of service are self-explanatory. All levels of service may be requested over the Internet. There is even a same day service available by making a telephone call.
